My family also came from USSR to US, I grew up my whole life being fully aware of the consequence of socialism. As an adult, I am married to a gentlemen from communist Bulgaria. For the people who clamber for socialism, I hope one day, they will live with it because it is exactly what they deserve. For this will make them realize that people do not excel under socialism, for on the best of days, socialism simply brought everyone hovering just above poverty level. That was the best case scenario and most of the time, things were not the best case.
Daily life was filled with hard work, food shortages, and a constant lack of basic necessities. If you wanted anything, even the most basic things, like for instance toilet paper, you purchased it illegally on the black market, so that life was bearable. However, if you were caught with these goods, you would be charged with theft of “The People’s” property and sometimes even killed for it. Buildings were all gloomy looking concrete gray, the streets were a crumbling mess right below your feet. Entire families lived in one single room, in which they shared a kitchen and a bathroom with everyone else on the floor. And forget having a car, only party elite had cars, which usually consisted of crappy Soviet made Lada or a Trabant.
My husband told me about a party meeting from when he was a younger and living in communist Bulgaria (which was way better than USSR, even Russians went there for a better life). One of the people at the meet had asked one of the commissars “but comrade, if capitalism has failed, why does everyone in America have cars?” The commissar said “this is because in America they do not have enough food, so they are too weak to walk.” LOL
